A funeral is the one gathering that only gets held once.

Peace of Heaven Funeral Chapel is independently owned and operated here in Silver City, and we arrange services for families across Grant County and the Mimbres Valley. Some families want the order and formality of a traditional funeral. Others want something quieter. Both are right. Our part is to build the day around the person, and to carry the details so your family does not have to keep track of them.

Most families set aside time before the service for visitation, when friends, neighbors, coworkers, and church members can come by, sign the register, and speak with the family without the formality of a ceremony. For many people it is the part they remember afterward.

Whether that time includes a viewing — open casket, closed casket, or a portrait and a memorial table instead — is your family’s decision, and there is no wrong answer. We will walk you through what each option involves so you can decide together rather than on the spot.

Visitation is commonly held the evening before the funeral, or in the hour just before it begins.

A service can be held in our chapel on Highway 180, in your own church or parish, or at the graveside. If your family belongs to a congregation, we work with your priest, pastor, or lay leader rather than around them. If you would rather a celebrant or a family member lead, that works too.

We coordinate the pieces so that nobody in your family is left holding a list:

• Clergy, celebrant, or officiant of your choosing
• A rosary, vigil, or prayer service the evening before
• Music, readings, eulogies, and the order of service
• Register books, memorial folders, and prayer cards
• Flowers, along with newspaper and online notices
• Transportation for your loved one and for the immediate family

The committal is the closing part of the day: the procession from the chapel or church to the cemetery, the words spoken at the grave, and the last few minutes together before everyone goes home.

Some families choose a graveside service instead of a chapel funeral altogether. Everything takes place at the cemetery, usually shorter and simpler, with readings, prayers, music, and military honors if you wish. It is equally available to families who have chosen cremation, with the urn interred at the close of the service.
